There was a grey cloud over Stamford Bridge at the start of the season. Despite the optimism of club legend Frank Lampard returning to take the managerial hot seat and steer the club in a new direction, question marks remained over the sheer size of the task at hand. Lampard would need to win over the fans over quickly and drive the club forward - albeit under a transfer ban. Eight games in, the Lampard Effect is in full swing having revitalised the club. Youth has been the way forward and nobody with Chelsea tickets this season would have expected such a quick upturn in fortune.

Lampard has been keen to give his young stars the chance to excel at the top level and shine both domestically and in Europe. Plenty of academy graduates have been involved, but two stars in particular have stood out. The season is still in its infancy but Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have been an integral part of Chelsea’s reformation. Abraham is the joint leading goalscorer in the league with eight goals with his team mate Mount chipping in with four goals from midfield. Their form has not gone unnoticed on the international stage either. Both players form was recognised with senior England bows as their progress continues to excel beyond means.

Lampard’s side were smashed by Manchester United on the opening day of the season but have lost just once in the league since then, taking 14 points from their eight games.

Mount gave his verdict on Premier League top four race last month in The Daily Mirror, insisting that the race for Champions League spots are “very open.”

The 20-year-old believes home form will be integral to their fortunes come the end of the season and that they must turn Stamford Bridge into a fortress if they are to compete with the likes of Tottenham , Arsenal and Manchester United in the battle to finish in the top four.

Mount said: “Look at the table, how many good teams there are - it’s very open and obviously, we are looking to secure that top position so we just need to keep working hard. We know how difficult this league is.

“Of course [we need to win at home], but if you look at the games we have had we can take positives from every game we have had. We need to win games at home, that’s a big focus."

Two back-to-back defeats in the space of five days to the hands of Liverpool and Valencia formed part of a hard learning process for the youngster. Mount was honest about Chelsea’s failings and what has been the biggest problem for them this season with Lampard giving so many inexperienced players a chance. Lampard’s faith in young players has given Mount and his fellow team mates, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Hudson Odoi a look-in and England a boost with Mount clearly relishing the opportunity under the Englishman.

Mount said: “I’ve been loving it and just learning from each game, every day in training, and nights, games like this where you learn the most that what you play football for. So, loving every minute, and loving the game.”

Ex-Liverpool defender and SkySports pundit, Phil Thompson said that Chelsea have surprised him the most so far this season. He told SportingLife: “Chelsea have surprised me the most, but I think Chelsea will do better than Manchester United and Arsenal.

“If they needed to splash the cash to help Frank in his first few months, then they would have done that in order to bring in a centre midfielder or attacker, subsequently knocking Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham out of the squad. It has been a great opportunity to give them a longer stint in the side.”

Chelsea finished fourth last term under Maurizio Sarri but the club appeared set for a year of transition with new boss Lampard unable to bolster his squad due to the imposed transfer ban.

Former Chelsea, Liverpool and England defender, Glen Johnson has revealed his excitement over Blues duo Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, who have both impressed so far this term.

‘If Chelsea can keep going as they are, they could easily break into the top four,’ Johnson said in a column for Betdaq.

Johnson continued: “The whole transfer ban could turn out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise as it’s forced the club to bring the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham through and, providing they keep going as they are, they look to have some potential stars on their hands.

“I’ve been really impressed with Abraham. I really didn’t think he could translate his form from the Championship to the Premier League, but he’s shown he’s more than up to it. There is such a huge difference between the two leagues, so to do what he’s done so soon into his Premier League career is very impressive.”
